Stonefish resemble weed-covered stones. They may attain a mottled brown-green colour with bony eminences and deep hollows around the head, and wart-like bumps on their trunk. They are often covered by a coat of slime to which algae and other organism adhere. This excellent camouflage, and their habit of partially burying themselves in the sand, makes them difficult to detect and avoid.
